Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to explain the concept and ways in which it can be achieved.

Because the environment is the most important element in determining future resources, it is essential to describe environmental sustainability in a clear, useful and logical way. This will facilitate communication between all the key stakeholders, including the government, communicators and innovators businesses, as well as effective understanding by them.

The paper will also provide an analysis of general purchasing patterns and its relationship to environmental sustainability.

Concept of environmental sustainability

Before I can define the term “environmental sustainability”, it is necessary to first define what sustainability means.

Sustainability can be defined as the ability or willingness to continue a particular behavior in the future. (Costanza and et.2015).

By ensuring that production activities by the present generation do not adversely affect the environment, environmental sustainability means that production is done with consideration for the environment. This ensures that future generations aren’t affected by their production.

Businesses must have a lower impact on the environment. Global warming and other adverse effects can have a long-lasting impact on future generations.

This is a key area that improves the well-being and sustainability of humanity on the planet.

To achieve different goals in society, sustainability should be present in the environment.

It is the ability to make efficient use of the environment’s resources in a balanced way so that it does not consume more than the resources available.

The amount of solid waste produced by an environment cannot be greater than what it is capable of holding. This is the only way to achieve environmental sustainability.

According to research, most of the environmental pollution is caused by businesses and industries located in diverse locations.

Industries cause pollution of the environment in both solid and liquid form.

The chemical wastes generated by industries can cause water pollution.

Many pollutions are being caused by businesses in major cities in different countries. UNEP has been alerted to the need for agencies like UNEP to devise policies that will improve the environment for sustainable business.

It is possible to create an environment that is sustainable when all the parties involved in production play different roles.

These parties include buyers, suppliers, and producers.

Suppliers are responsible for ensuring that the supply of goods or services is environmentally sustainable.

Pipelines are used by some suppliers of products like oil suppliers to transport the goods to their customers.

This is important because it minimizes the effects of the tankers, which emit carbon monoxide into the environment. This results in air pollution that is dangerous for both animals and plants.

Pipeline transport is efficient in that it reduces the risk of oil spillage from tankers, which can have an adverse effect on the environment.

The industry producers are involved in the production and distribution of bio-degradable materials that enhance the regulation of solid waste in our environment.

Reverse logistics is a common practice in most industries. This involves the return of packages used for recycling by suppliers.

This allows for the reduction of solid waste.

Different products have different roles that consumers play in ensuring sustainable consumption.

In order to minimize pollution, the consumers can play a part in proper waste disposal.

Some consumers have the option to set up collection points within their properties where they can dispose of certain waste materials collected by the agents of the organization for recycling. This promotes environmental sustainability.

Herman Daly was one of the first to advocate ecological sustainability. Herman looked at the problem from the standpoint of natural capital preservation and suggested that:

Any renewable resource must be harvested at a rate that is equal to the rate of regeneration.

The rate at which waste products are generated from ventures should not exceed the environmental assimilative capability.

In order to exhaust non-renewable sources, there must be comparable creation of renewable resources substitute.

This is a widely accepted list. Accordingly, environmental sustainability, as defined by the list, can be defined as: “The rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution and creation that can be continued indefinitely, and if they can’t be continued indefinitely, then they are not sustainable” (Riikkinen. Kauppi. Salmi.2017).

How environmental sustainability can be achieved (Case by UNEP).

Statistics show that in 2002, one child died from disease caused by unclean water and poor hygiene.

One out of six people in the world was not able get clean water, according to the statistics.

There were nearly 300 million children under the age of six, and this was for a total population of over 1 billion.

The majority of people didn’t have latrines, and many children live in cramped dwellings with mud flooring.

80 percent of sub-Saharan children rely on surface water, while others have to travel long distances in order to access safe water sources (McKinnon et. al.

Unclean water can lead to diarrhoea, cholera and other diseases.

These diseases claim the lives of approximately 4 million people annually, most of whom are young children.

These diseases are common in African countries.

Poor health conditions can affect children’s learning abilities.

Intestinal worms affect the mental abilities of 300 million children annually, according to Singh (2015).

Many young children, particularly girls, have to travel great distances to get clean water. The children are so affected that they cannot go to school.

The inability to access latrines can severely impact children’s dignity.

The children might have to wait until the evening to use their latrines.

To protect their safety and modesty, they do this.

It is evident that the diseases can spread to the rest of the family by poor water sanitation. The sick and pregnant women can also pass the disease on to their children (Wong, Zhou, 2015).

The problem isn’t that there isn’t enough water.

Insufficient government commitments and insufficient technology are the main reasons for water scarcity.

These factors can also be attributed to a lack funds.

UNEP Responds To Improve Environmental Sustainability

UNEP Helps African Countries With Hygiene Education and Technology Improvement

It is vital to conserve water resources that policies and programmes encourage sustainable development.

UNEP has been active in this field for over 40 years and is recognized as a leading UN agency.

It is possible to dispose of water properly and reduce wastage.

Water treatment costs are reduced by conserving water resources and preventing contamination (Acquaye 2017, 2017).

UNEP, in collaboration with its partners, such as the EU Water Initiative, International Water Association, and the US Environmental Protection Agency is working to get government support to reach the goals and assist countries in creating sanitation and water programs at low cost.

It also promotes hygiene education at all community levels.

It is important to teach parents how to maintain good hygiene so that they can pass the knowledge on to their children.

There is a great opportunity to address global energy access problems by utilizing distributed technology. This sector has matured fiscal tools, and the appraisal of distributed technology has been well-received.

The most important factor to overcome when technology is available is the fiscal challenge. This can be done by making long-term investment that is bankable and sustainable.

Enabling this will enable energy systems attain affordability and sustainability. (Centobelli Cerchione & Esposito 2017).

It is essential to have strong collaboration among sectors

UNEP management noted that collaboration is necessary between different sectors to achieve environmental sustainability. This includes those who are responsible for water, sanitation, energy, and rural and urban development in different nations.

The latest strategy on environment shows how collaboration is essential in reaching results that address the basic environmental problems that most developing countries face.

The collaboration between Human Development Network, Sustainable Development Network (Minten and Zeller 2017,) led to the creation of this strategy.

UNEP reviews recognize environmental related development policies to support institutional reforms.

The UNEP evaluates each policy separately because the environmental achievements of the policy might not be directly related to the disbursed investment amount.

The development of an environment can help a country achieve sustainability.

Research has shown that choking plastics cause the deaths of more than 50, 000 marine species and 500’000 birds every year.

UNEP recommends that you use reusable bottles, travel bags and grocery bags.

The main habitat at risk of deforestation in the area around the Equator is the tropical rainforest.

UNEP tried to manage the forest better in the developing world, because many countries are cutting down trees at an alarming pace.

The primary reason people chop down trees is because they are in desperate need of wood, fuel, paper and other products.

One of the most damaging effects of deforestation on the environment is global warming and soil erosion.

UNEP has set up measures that discourage deforestation as well as encourage afforestation.

These activities are crucial for any company to achieve its purchasing goals.

The key buying practices include negotiation for an amazing price, sourcing suppliers and planning and forecasting for the purchasing process.

Relationship between environmental sustainability and purchasing practices

An organization’s activities that are environmentally sustainable is those that conserve the environment.

This is important because it helps to create a favorable business environment for both the company and the members of the society.

Today, environmental sustainability has become a significant concern due to increased environmental problems such as global warming from the loss of the ozone layers and increased pollution by solid wastes.

Research shows that businesses are responsible for the majority of pollution to the environment. They do this through their activities in manufacturing, logistics, and marketing.

UNEP and other organizations have established various regulations to help protect the environment.

These regulations cover the production and recycling of products as well as the establishment of central points for garbage collection to reduce solid waste (Pullman&Wikoff, 2017).

Most businesses have begun to implement green purchasing, a major purchasing strategy that involves purchasing raw materials with a minimal impact on the environment. This is done after manufacturing has finished and before disposal by the consumer (Marchisotto and al.

So that consumers are able to make informed decisions about which products they purchase, manufacturers must clearly describe the ingredients that went into the product.

To enable consumers to use the product at their own risk, they should also clearly state the side effects.

We need questionnaires from the Supplier

The business should request suppliers to complete questionnaires detailing the environmental aspects of each product. It should also ask for the management systems that promote environmental sustainability in products (Wiengarten & Ambrose 2017).

Green purchasing focuses on the coordination of the environmental performance for the products sold by sellers.

UNEP is also focusing its efforts on reducing deforestation. UNEP sponsors the producers to encourage the use of energy sources, such as biogas. This will increase production and reduce deforestation.

UNEP encourages corporate social responsibilities programs by sponsoring organizations with the provision of clothing for environmental cleaning that is planned occasionally. This creates a conducive environment which enhances the organization’s ability to function well and also the members of the society (Schmidt Foerstl & Schaltenbrand 2017).

The purchase of sustainable goods or services with a reduced impact on the environment and human health is an example of environmental sustainability in procurement.

The following characteristics are found in environmentally friendly products: They are less harmful to natural resource during and after consumption; they use less energy during manufacturing which will increase energy conservation, especially if solar power is used. Products should not contain toxic substances to prevent pollution of the environment after they are disposed off (Van & De Langen 2017).

Social Reasons

Businesses must make use of public resources effectively to ensure sustainability.

Water is one example of such resources.

The rivers are crucial to society’s well-being and industries should not release their waste products. They should instead use the water to perform various industrial operations, and have a section for collection (Carley & Spapens 2017).

Economic Reasons

To benefit the whole community, all industries should buy electricity.

It is important not to waste power because some of the natural resources like rivers are used in electricity generation (Ledgerwood 2017).

For environmental reasons

Companies should seek out raw materials that are less harmful to the environment in order to minimize the impact of climate change on human health.

Companies should be environmentally conscious and use long chimneys to prevent smoke from affecting people or plants.

UNEP has issued regulations to help industries control pollution.

One regulation is that industries must use smoke filters in order to prevent carbon monoxide being emitted into our atmosphere. It is a major factor in global warming and greenhouse effect.

This ensures that the environment is conducive for humans, animals, and plants (Johnsen Miemczyk and Howard, 2017).

Importance of environmental sustainability in relation to purchasing practices

The following are some of the benefits that environmental purchasing brings:

Reduces energy consumption and water consumption

Improves efficiency of limited resources.

Reduce waste by purchasing products that can easily be recycled.

This market creates an environment for sustainable products and facilitates their distribution to other places. This reduces pollution (Kroger Duchin & Valez, 2017).

It increases the potential for product recycling

Incentives to adopt cleaner technologies by different industries to improve the production of more toxic products

Because they are popular with many customers, products that are sustainable are more successful in the marketplace.

This is because the product has a lower risk for the consumer and the environment. (Lo, & Kwan 2017).

The product life cycle begins with the product. Each stage of product development is improved to ensure environmental sustainability.

Each stage in the product cycle has a different impact on the environment.

The extraction of raw materials can lead to environmental pollution, which is not sustainable. (Ottman 2017,).

The environment is negatively affected by activities such as mining or deforestation.

When raw materials are processed, harmful gases are released into the air which can have a negative effect on the environment.

Solid waste pollution can also occur when hazardous solid wastes are exposed to the environment (Eizenberg, Jabareen, 2017).

Recycling products has very little environmental impact because there is less dependence on virgin resources. However, it does require some waste products to make the process complete.

Because most of the environmental damage is done during product consumption, choosing the right raw material is crucial to minimize the impact on the environment. (Kemp 2017, 2017).

Rio Tinto, Unilever, Ford, General motors Holden, and Toyota all have policies that permit suppliers to adopt some of the sustainable environmental practices necessary to start the purchase of raw material (Mogre, Lindgreen, and Hingley, 2017).

These companies all have one rule in common: “If we want you to do business with you, you have to achieve certain levels environmental or social performance in the operations of your operation.”

This has been a standard principle for supply chain management in many companies.

The established code for suppliers ensures that companies receive raw materials with a low environmental impact, thereby promoting sustainability (Pascual et.al.

Some businesses have worked with suppliers to recycle and reuse packaging materials.

This is a sustainable business practice because it promotes environmental conservation and sustainability (Mishra 2017).

Environment-friendly Purchasing Strategies

Implementation at the Department

These practices should be adopted within departments at the time of purchasing materials from suppliers.

This would eventually lead to raw materials which are environmentally friendly in the production process for the entire company.

Before you purchase from suppliers, you should know the risks the product poses to the environment.

This ensures that the product is safe for the environment after it has been disposed of. It also enhances environmental sustainability. Rodriguez, Benito, 2017.

A checklist should be kept of all environmental hazards found in raw materials. This will allow the organization to avoid using raw materials that contain hazardous substances.

Conclusion

The environment is crucial to the well-being of society. Therefore, it should be conserved.

The only way for human beings to be interested in sustainability is to be educated about it.

It is important to adopt sustainable business practices to improve the environment for business operations.

Suppliers should ensure safe raw materials to meet sustainable business goals (Kumar, Manrai & Manrai 2017, 2017).
